FAQ

What is this?

  • I select a thematically appropriate horror movie for each day of the year and tell you about it.

Why?

  • It seemed like a good idea at the time.

How do you get to decide what qualifies as a horror movie and where each one goes on the calendar?

  • I am the Mayor of Horror Movies.

Are all these movies good?

  • Oh gosh no.  But I recommend all of them to  the adventurous viewer.

What’s with the CWs?

  • In horror movies, disturbing material is part of the entertainment package. But for some viewers, elements like sexual violence or bigotry ruin the fun.  For those folks, I include content warnings.  That said, the warnings are based on my personal reactions and should not be expected to cover all potential cinematic skeeviness, so proceed with caution.

Who are you, aside from the mayor?

  • I’m Shaenon K. Garrity.  I’m mostly a cartoonist.  I watch a lot of scary movies while I draw cartoons.

This is probably the first Horror/Sci-fi movie that I saw all the way through. Most of them either lost my interest because they were boring and/or badly written (I was MySTing Horror movies long before Joel, Mike and the ‘bots were around), or they were on at a time when I had to do other stuff and I couldn’t finish what I was watching.

“Them” is a movie with TONS of actors who would go on to great careers of their own in bit parts. Leonard Nimoy, Dick York, William Schallert, all in uncredited roles. Also, how can you pass on a non-western with James Whitmore, Fess Parker, AND James Arness?

Easily one of my favorite monster movie (“The Thing From Another World” is it’s only real competition), I still watch it about once a year (it was nice to see it show up in “Ant Man And The Wasp”).

There is no earthly reason a movie about giant nuclear-mutated ants should be as good as Them! is–and yet it is so very good.

The first and best Atomic Horror movie. Sold by the fact that the actors really sell their roles, not matter how silly the idea of giant ants are. Love it.

It was many years ago I saw this, but I remember it as intelligent and well-acted, at least for a horror movie 😉

To our eternal shame, the Swedish title of this film back in 1954 was set to Spindlarna (“The Spiders”).
