FAQ

What is this?

  • I select a thematically appropriate horror movie for each day of the year and tell you about it.

Why?

  • It seemed like a good idea at the time.

How do you get to decide what qualifies as a horror movie and where each one goes on the calendar?

  • I am the Mayor of Horror Movies.

Are all these movies good?

  • Oh gosh no.  But I recommend all of them to  the adventurous viewer.

What’s with the CWs?

  • In horror movies, disturbing material is part of the entertainment package. But for some viewers, elements like sexual violence or bigotry ruin the fun.  For those folks, I include content warnings.  That said, the warnings are based on my personal reactions and should not be expected to cover all potential cinematic skeeviness, so proceed with caution.

Who are you, aside from the mayor?

  • I’m Shaenon K. Garrity.  I’m mostly a cartoonist.  I watch a lot of scary movies while I draw cartoons.

Wait, I remember there actually being such a thing as a Hellraiser in Space movie; don’t recall the title. Or am I suffering from the Mengele Effect?

You’re thinking of “Hellraiser Bloodlines”, the fourth film in the Hellraiser franchise. The movie’s plot is split between 3 different time periods, with the 3rd part taking place on a space station.

Isn’t that the Mandela Effect…or is the mengele effect a thing (sounds much worse if it is)

Event Horizon is one of the movies that proves that you just shouldn’t go into space with certain people. Sam Neil, Gary Oldman, Lance Henriksen. Just shove ’em out the airlock, its safest.

@Virgil_Greene is probably thinking of the 4th Hellraiser which is set in multiple time periods, the last in the future and involves a space station.

I usually think of Event Horizon as Lovecraftian, but I have to admit that “Hellraiser in space before Hellraiser got there” is a pretty apt description. I re-watch EH every couple of years, when I stumble across it in Netflix, Amazon Prime or even the library.

Event Horizon is a really f***ed up movie. I mean that as a compliment

I’ve not seen Event Horizon, but from a friend’s description it may also have taken some inspiration from Warhammer 40,000. (Or, of course, it may be a case of convergent evolution.)

@Carl Fishman: I was going to say. There’s definitely a lot of similarity to some of the things that can happen to ships going into the Warp in 40K.

This one got over-hyped to me, too many people telling me how much it had scared them before I eventually got around to watching it. So the first watch was a bit of a disappointment, but watching it again, I really grooved on a lot of the imagery and visuals.

I love that the main airlock is intuitively designated with Roman numerals XIII. Roman numerals are so useful in space, where there’s no clear up or down. Is that XI or IX?

Well, depending on the font, is it “9” or “6”?

That’s a brilliant coincidence. I must make use of it sometime.

Good thing about Event Horizon:accurate depiction of explosive decompression
GREAT thing about Event Horison: Sam Neil and Laurence Fishburne trying to out act each other
