FAQ

What is this?

  • I select a thematically appropriate horror movie for each day of the year and tell you about it.

Why?

  • It seemed like a good idea at the time.

How do you get to decide what qualifies as a horror movie and where each one goes on the calendar?

  • I am the Mayor of Horror Movies.

Are all these movies good?

  • Oh gosh no.  But I recommend all of them to  the adventurous viewer.

What’s with the CWs?

  • In horror movies, disturbing material is part of the entertainment package. But for some viewers, elements like sexual violence or bigotry ruin the fun.  For those folks, I include content warnings.  That said, the warnings are based on my personal reactions and should not be expected to cover all potential cinematic skeeviness, so proceed with caution.

Who are you, aside from the mayor?

  • I’m Shaenon K. Garrity.  I’m mostly a cartoonist.  I watch a lot of scary movies while I draw cartoons.

Hmmm, trasnforming into a goat-man? I’ll have to find that for…personal reasons.

Didn’t he also transform from a hot chick into himself? That was disturbing too…

Man, what a cast. Besides Shatner and Borgnine, it’s got Tom Skerrit, Keenan Wynn, Eddie Albert, and Ida Lupino, one of the most underutilized actresses of the century. (Also John Travolta’s first big-screen part.) Maybe it’ll show up on TCM Underground some day.

For a different Shatner horror film, check out Incubus from 1966. Very weird (even ignoring the fact that it’s entirely in Esperanto). I haven’t seen it for a while, but I remember Shatner’s performance as being surprisingly sweet and understated.

I still have one of LaVey’s business cards from before he went feral. It was a while before I realized that “Howard” and “Anton” were the same person.

Back then he was an organist. Unfortunately, not a very good one. I always thought it was weird that the guy who used to play organ at a church wound up going the quite opposite direction that he did.
