FAQ

What is this?

  • I select a thematically appropriate horror movie for each day of the year and tell you about it.

Why?

  • It seemed like a good idea at the time.

How do you get to decide what qualifies as a horror movie and where each one goes on the calendar?

  • I am the Mayor of Horror Movies.

Are all these movies good?

  • Oh gosh no.  But I recommend all of them to  the adventurous viewer.

What’s with the CWs?

  • In horror movies, disturbing material is part of the entertainment package. But for some viewers, elements like sexual violence or bigotry ruin the fun.  For those folks, I include content warnings.  That said, the warnings are based on my personal reactions and should not be expected to cover all potential cinematic skeeviness, so proceed with caution.

Who are you, aside from the mayor?

  • I’m Shaenon K. Garrity.  I’m mostly a cartoonist.  I watch a lot of scary movies while I draw cartoons.

Ooh, this sounds like it’s right up my alley!

This appears to be a major redesign of the 1973 TV movie of the same name, starring Kim Darby (for over forty years the only thing other than True Grit and Star Trek I ever saw her in). As a teenager I was thoroughly creeped out by the original; it left me with a lingering distrust of fireplaces.

I saw the original, and it REALLY scared the crap out of 8-yr-old me. Found it on dvd a few years ago, and it still holds up pretty well. The new one was good, but I do prefer the original.

The original can be viewed at Archive.org here https://archive.org/details/DontBeAfraidOfTheDark1973VHSRip

While the new one was an Australian production, the original was filmed at Newhall Mansion, which also showed up in a season 6 X-Files episode (the Christmas ep with Ed Asner and Lilly Tomlin).

“How the Ghosts Stole Christmas”. Loved the marble floor and the blood trail on it as they dragged themselves along.
